In May of 2015 the City of Albuquerque launched a campaign titled Theres A Better Way with hopes to curb pan handling around the Albuquerque metro area. A ten seater passenger van was given to St. Martins homeless shelter with hopes to patrol the city every Tuesday and Thursday and offer pan handlers a days work.
Will Cole, an employee of St. Martins, packs breakfast and lunch for the days workers before he sets off. Offering the workers $9 an hour and for manual labor around the city, the van each day fills to capacity. The work consists of landscaping projects around the city with tools loaned to the program by the city.
